Professor Steve Poole is Professor of History and Heritage at the University of the West of England, where his work focuses on eighteenth and nineteenth century history from below, with a particular emphasis on crime, popular protest and the crowd in south-western counties. His paper explores the way in which protest movements in the late eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth-century have been remembered, and the politics surrounding their commemoration.
