This seminar will discuss the experience of Water Warriors Living Lab, a bottom-up action research initiative from the University of Malaya, Malaysia in applying the so-called ‘Heartware’ approach in integrated watershed management. We experimented with the proposition that an organic heartware approach is critical to enhance the sustainability of integrated watershed management, in addition to the more strategic hardware (technological) and software (policy and regulation) approaches.
The paper describes how the Water Warrior’s experience in applying the heartware approach has been a strengthening factor in resolving water conservation issues at two interconnected urban-rural locations: (1) University of Malaya’s own campus ground in Malaysia’s capital city of Kuala Lumpur, and (2) Mukim Pasangan, a rural downstream watershed community located at the Selangor River. Selangor River provides about 60% of water supply to Kuala Lumpur.
