Instruments of the ship surgeon

For December’s talk, we’re excited to welcome Dr Jasmine Kilburn-Toppin (Cardiff University), to speak on the theme: Saving ‘the lives and limbs of many’: At sea with sixteenth and seventeenth century ships’ surgeons.

This talk will explore the fascinating experiences and medical practices of late sixteenth-and seventeenth-century British ship surgeons on mercantile and naval vessels. Accounts written and printed by sea surgeons offer unique insights into medical, social, and emotional aspects of seafaring lives, and the meanings of surgical knowledge in the early modern world.
