Corpi Neri: Italian Black Identities (Dr Luisa Pèrcopo, Lecturer in Translation and Cultural Studies and Co-Director of ICCW and IFFC, and Dr Luca Paci, Lecturer in Italian Studies, Translator, Co-Director of ICCW and IFFC).
This event, delivered in partnership with the Italian Cultural Centre Wales, focuses on artist, performer and producer, Anna Maria Gehnyei, a.k.a. Karima 2G, who will present her recently published book “Il corpo nero” (Fandango Libri, 2023). The book talks about her experience growing up as a second-generation Italian from Liberian parents and the connection between Liberia and the United States. Anna Maria will answer questions from the audience and there will be an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Il corpo nero.
As we celebrate and honour Black History Month in the UK, ‘Il corpo nero’ emerges as a poignant choice for its historical significance and resonance with the themes of diversity, representation, and empowerment. The narrative offers a profound glimpse into her life and accomplishments as well as those of her family and ancestors, and sheds light on the importance of recognizing and appreciating the contributions of black figures throughout history.
Following the book presentation, there will be a wine reception for in-person attendees.
The book presentation is also available to watch online.
