At a time of unparalleled uncertainty, the economic and fiscal outlook for Wales have become much gloomier. As well as squeezing household budgets and livings standards, higher inflation has eroded the real-terms value of the Welsh Government’s budget, with the prospect of further spending cuts to come. As the path of UK government’s fiscal policy becomes clearer, the Welsh Government faces difficult choices on public spending and devolved taxes.
Ahead of the Welsh Government’s Draft Budget for 2023−24, join the Wales Fiscal Analysis (WFA) team for a discussion of a new briefing report on the outlook for the Welsh Budget and the challenges ahead.
The WFA team will discuss:
• The implications of the UK government’s Medium-Term Fiscal Plan for Wales
• The cost-of-living crisis and government measures
• The impact of inflation on public services, pressures on local government budgets, and the public sector pay bill
• Options and trade-offs for Welsh government spending allocations and devolved tax policy
