Mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, psychosis and bipolar disorder have considerable impacts on the lives of those affected and their families. These illnesses are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Major advances have been made in understanding how genetics contributes to the risk of these conditions, and the Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics has led much of this work.
Join Professor James Walters (MSc 2005, PhD 2012), Director of the Centre; Dr Kimberley Kendall (BSc 2007, MBBCh 2009, PhD 2021), Research Fellow and Psychiatrist, and Dr Antonio Pardiñas, Research Fellow as they discuss how genomics provides insights and new treatment avenues for these conditions.
The Centre is using research to shape our understanding of mental illness and translating these findings from the laboratory, through to improving treatments and developing the first clinic in the UK offering genetic counselling and testing to patients and families.
