Innovation is often understood in terms of inventions and technology, and so primarily an activity that takes place within STEM. But innovation is broader than that and something that Social Scientists are doing across Cardiff University. This can come in the form of innovation in public policymaking, organisational and institutional innovation, and social entrepreneurship; it goes beyond the context of income generation arising from new inventions and technologies.

Social Science research can enrich and inform society to create the context in which policy and technological innovations can flourish; Social Scientists’ understanding of the cultural factors, institutional relationships and power structures can be the special sauce that enables something creative or inventive to mature into a real innovation.

In the first in series of the SUMMER OF INNOVATION taking place June-July 2022 we want people to join and discuss how innovation beyond STEM transpires. This will be facilitated by a panel of professional services members of staff, academics and external partners from across the University.

The event is chaired and hosted by Professor Gill Bristow who is currently a Professor in Economic Geography and Head of the School of Geography and Planning. Gill is an engaged researcher and works closely with partners in the Cardiff Capital Region and in Wales in support of economic development. Gill is also a member of the UK2070 Commission which is advocating for greater spatial justice in the UK, and is a member of the Wales Productivity Forum. Gill also sits on the Evidence Advisory Committee for Natural Resources Wales.

Panellists include:

Nadine Payne (Strategic Partnerships and Projects Manager), Chris Taylor (Academic Director, Cardiff University Social Science Research Park – SPARK), Professor John Harrington (Director of the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership and Professor of Global Health Law at Cardiff School of Law and Politics) and Paul Harrod (CEO of Evidence to Impact and experienced Social Entrepreneur)
