Children with developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome (DS) or Autism often have language learning difficulties. As a result, concerns have been raised about the capacity of these children to acquire two (or more) languages, and parents may be advised to avoid bilingual exposure. This research examines the language profiles of Welsh-English bilingual children with DS and typically developing children in comparison to monolinguals, with a view towards identifying the factors associated with language abilities within these populations. Important clinical and educational applications of the findings will be discussed and future research directions proposed.
This seminar will be delivered over Zoom in Welsh with simultaneous English translation available.
