For our first talk of 2021-22, we’re excited to welcome Continuing and Professional Education’s Dr Juliette Wood (Cardiff University), who will bringing her extensive expertise in Folklore to the theme of ‘Scarecrows’.
What is it about the scarecrow that gives it this potential? Does it depend on its position in folk culture, an ancient meaning, a ritual usage or the ways in which we have re-interpreted the figure in terms of later cultural models?
The answer is probably a combination of all these factors. Whatever the origin, the changing function of this ephemeral figure is expressed in new ways in modern craft festivals and in an increasing range of anthropomorphized gothic figures in literature and popular culture.
