Translating the performance culture: bilingual song words by the Gwynn Publishing Company
This paper will examine examples of the output of the musical publishing company the Gwynn Publishing Company of Llangollen, during its first decade: 1937–47. The company would publish each song with lyrics, to be sung, in both Welsh and English on each publication.
By examining the types of texts chosen to be translated by the company, as well as individual translation strategies used by the company’s main translator in this period, T. Gwynn Jones, it will be shown how the Gwynn Publishing Company and its contributors can be considered as agents of the Welsh performance culture, and how song-translations shaped and influenced that particular culture.
