Dr Hushneara Miah, Centre for Sustainability
Driven by legislation and increasing environmental awareness, sustainability has become an important issue among leading organisations, research institutions and policymakers at national and international levels. The most talked about and focused aspect is Climate Change, which constitutes a key component of environmental sustainability discourse. A critical causal factor of Climate Change is the increase in greenhouse gases (GHG), the most significant being carbon dioxide (carbon), resulting from human activities.
As the majority of carbon emissions are emitted through industrial activity, industry is now being be targeted to support the fight against Climate Change through activities such as procurement and supply chains management.
Low Carbon Procurement (i.e. procuring products/services that will directly or indirectly lower carbon emissions) is being used as a central policy lever to support the fight against climate change. This presentation will outline the landscape around the implementation of the concept of Low Carbon Procurement within the public procurement function with insightful findings from research carried out in Wales along with offering recommendations to improve implementation of Low Carbon Procurement in the fight against climate change.
