Loss of biodiversity is a global emergency, and there is a groundswell of public goodwill for protecting species and habitats, yet as individuals we often feel powerless to respond. Crowdfunding of place-based conservation provides a format by which individuals can become empowered to protect biodiversity, by actions as simple as donating even a very small amount of money, or by sharing updates on social media.
In this talk I will outline two recent crowdfunded purchases which have secured special places for conservation. In both instances, the crowdfunding process itself has led to other, unplanned benefits, and lessons learned may be applied to other approaches to generating resources for conservation, research and education.
