Mental Health for Future Generations with Dr Alex George

Mental health and brain disorders are societal challenges. 1 in 12 young people in the UK are suffering from an anxiety disorder or depression, and 75% of mental health problems start before the age of 18.

On 8 May 2024, we welcomed presenter, best-selling author, and Youth Mental Health Ambassador to the government, Dr Alex George, who shared insights into his professional and personal encounters with mental health challenges, emphasising his commitment to dismantling the stigma surrounding it.

This event was hosted by the Neuroscience and Mental Health Innovation Institute.

Navigating Disinformation: Who Should We Trust? with Babita Sharma

In recent years, the news and information landscape has become increasingly hard to navigate. The rise of fake news and the rapid spread of disinformation and misinformation via social media is eroding trust in institutions, dividing communities, and damaging our democracies. We are exposed to millions of pieces of information every day but how do we know who we should trust, and what skills do we need to fact-check what we’re being told? And who is making the decisions in news sources and sites that we rely on?

On 23 October 2024, we heard from broadcaster and Cardiff University alumna, Babita Sharma (BA 1998), who talked about her experiences of working as a journalist and interviewer in the era of fake news and artificial intelligence, how she calls out those in power seeking to spread disinformation, and how it’s our mutual responsibility to critically examine what we’re being told.

This event was hosted by the Security, Crime, and Intelligence Innovation Institute.
