Why study in Welsh?
82% of businesses in Wales say that using the Welsh language adds value to their services. As a result, many employers are seeking employees with bilingual skills to better serve their customers.
Studying bilingually helps you to get a deeper understanding of your chosen subject. It enriches your learning experience by offering:
- more choice
- different perspectives - including a Welsh perspective - on your subject
- unique and varied experiences while learning and beyond
You will learn the skills, confidence, and experience to use Welsh in the workplace and contribute bilingually to Wales's economic, social, and cultural life.
We offer over 60 courses covering various subjects, fully or partially taught in Welsh.
You can also take your exams and assignments in Welsh, whether you've been studying through the medium of Welsh or not, and have access to a Welsh-speaking personal tutor who can support you throughout your studies here.
Financial support
We understand the importance of financial security and scholarships when applying to university. Alongside Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, we offer a wide range of financial support to help you focus on your studies and personal growth in the language of your choice.
We will award you £250 per year for every 20 credits you study in Welsh and £500 per year for every 40 credits you study in Welsh through the Studying in Welsh Scholarship.
Up to £1,000 is also available with the Yr Academi Gymraeg Betty Campbell Scholarship. We particularly encourage students who may encounter obstacles or uncertainty when choosing to study in Welsh.
Flexible study options
You can study some modules in Welsh. Depending on your choice of subject, you could combine English lectures with Welsh-medium tutorials or do them all in Welsh. It is up to you.
Are you an aspiring polyglot? Combine your Welsh language skills with opportunities to learn other languages at university. Some courses will give you the chance to spend a year abroad.
Become a Cardiff citizen
Undergraduate students who indicate that they are fluent speakers or have Welsh-language skills will also be automatically enrolled (with an optional opt-out) in our Yr Academi Gymraeg's Cardiff Citizen Module.
This 5-credit module provides an interactive learning environment for first-year students with Welsh language skills. It allows them to explore Cardiff and the Welsh language within the local community and university.
Home from home
Some flats at Senghennydd Court and Talybont North are reserved for undergraduate students who are Welsh speakers or learners, and both accommodations have a thriving Welsh language community.
