Information about the nomination and selection process for the Chris McGuigan Drug Discovery Awards.
Nomination process
Nominations should be submitted to the Selection Panel by an academic from within Cardiff University College of Biomedical and Life Sciences.
Each nomination must be accompanied by a supporting statement which is available on request by email at mcguiganaward@cardiff.ac.uk.
Deadline
The deadlines for nominations are 17:00 on:
- Friday 30 October 2020
- Monday 31 October 2022
- Thursday 31 October 2024
- Friday 30 October 2026
Nominations received prior to each deadline will be considered by the Selection Panel and the successful award winners will be notified after minutes have been approved by the Chair.
The Selection Panel will select award winners by the last working day of November in 2020, 2022, 2024 and 2026.
Selection process
Nominations will be reviewed and a recommendation of the award winners will be determined by a Selection Panel comprising of:
- Head of School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (Chair)
- Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences or a nominee
- Dean of Research for the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences or a nominee
- representative with appropriate standing from the private pharmaceutical sector
- a co-opted academic (external to Cardiff University) of appropriate standing in the field.
Both the industry representative and co-opted academic will be invited by the Chair to join the Selection Panel for one year and will be selected by the aforementioned Cardiff University panel members. Individuals may be invited to join the Selection Panel more than once.
Award conditions
Award winners must agree to attend the Chris McGuigan Symposium which will take place at Cardiff University at a date to be agreed in September 2021, 2023, 2025 and 2027
Winners of the McGuigan Award for Distinguished Work in Drug Discovery must agree to give a lecture about their work/research on the evening of the Memorial Symposium.
All award winners must agree to attend a small private dinner following the evening lecture of the Symposium. Two representatives of the late Professor McGuigan's family will also be invited to attend the dinner.
Confirmation of attendance of all award winners must be received no later than 17:00 on the last working day of March in 2021, 2023, 2025 and 2027.
If any award winners are unable to fulfil the conditions, the Selection Panel will offer the award to the second choice nominee.
Travel and accommodation
A travel and accommodation budget has been allocated to enable the Rising Star and Distinguished Work in Drug Discovery award winners to travel to Cardiff to attend the Chris McGuigan Symposium.
The Rising Star and Distinguished Work in Drug Discovery Award winners will be invited to submit an expenses claim form and original receipts for reimbursement up to the value of the travel budget allocated to that award in each year. If an award winner is unable to cover travel costs upfront, they should contact the Chair to request that Cardiff University books travel and accommodation on their behalf.
