Inclusivity in Studies Group

Our Centre for Trials Research (CTR) Inclusivity in Studies Group consists of a group of researchers from the Centre with an interest in the prioritisation of inclusivity and research partners who guide, advise and support the group.

Importance of inclusivity in research

Research is essential to improving health and wellbeing, but not everyone can easily take part in research studies. Research needs to be inclusive and accessible to ensure that the needs of all relevant groups are met, that the process and results are understood and applicable to them, and that they have an equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from research.

The principles of equality, diversity and inclusivity should be embedded throughout the whole research process. This includes deciding what research should be done, ensuring studies are designed in a way that matters to those taking part, and that the results are shared with everyone concerned. Ensuring research is inclusive is a priority for organisations who fund research and those responsible for overseeing research.

CTR Inclusivity in Studies Group

The group acts as a focal point for inclusivity guidance within CTR, and with collaborators outside of the Centre. We provide advice and support for the following activities:

  • planning for inclusivity in clinical research and supporting improvements where challenges exist
  • promoting training and development in inclusivity in clinical research for CTR staff and research partners
  • monitoring and highlighting inclusivity activities and best practice within the CTR
  • engaging CTR staff and collaborators via meetings and other channels of communication such as blogs, University website links or webpage links
  • promoting inclusivity to relevant groups and individuals outside of the Centre for Trials Research
  • leading research in methods to involve under-served groups in research.

Talking Trials: Including the voices of people from minority ethnic backgrounds in health research

The Talking Trials project brought together a group of co-researchers from diverse ethnic backgrounds to discuss health research and provide well-considered recommendations to clinical trial stakeholders to facilitate inclusive engagement and involvement in health research.
