Muslims and journalistic training in Britain
A project to lay the groundwork for research on Muslims in Britain training for work in journalism.
Dr Michael Munnik received an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account Initiator grant to lay the groundwork for research on Muslims in Britain training for work in journalism.
In the first half of 2016, Munnik met with representatives from the news industry and from voluntary sector organisations interested in widening access to journalism and the issue of media representation of Muslims in Britain. These partners have helped refine Munnik’s research focus and ensure it is applicable to their needs, as some of these groups will be in a position to adopt new recruitment and mentoring strategies to bring young British Muslims into their newsroom staff ranks and help them advance.
Other groups can use the findings to tailor their strategies as they connect marginalised people with the media industry to bring in new voices.
Munnik is preparing to study a cohort of trainees, inviting and analysing their reflections on the connections between faith and work.
