Dev and Alex

In July 2024, Dev and Alex, International Management (MSc) students from Cardiff Business School, attended the X-Culture Global Business Week Symposium in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

As part of the International Management (MSc) programme, students gain hands-on international business experience through X-Culture, with the global top 150 participants invited to the symposium each year.

The 2024 event in Thailand involved a client consulting project, professional development sessions, and cultural experiences, giving Dev and Alex the chance to collaborate with students and experts from around the world.

Dev’s experience

The symposium kicked off with an exciting lineup of faculty lectures covering various aspects of global business practices. I attended sessions that delved into topics such as international marketing strategies and cross-cultural business negotiations.

These lectures were not only informative but also interactive, encouraging us to apply these concepts through various group activities and discussions.

Cultural Day and workshops

One of the highlights of the symposium was the Cultural Day, where we dressed in casual attire, sporting university or country-themed T-shirts, and explored the rich heritage of Chiang Rai. The guided city tour included visits to the old town and the iconic White Temple, which were breathtaking.

Not only did these excursions allow us to appreciate Thai culture, but they also provided a relaxed setting for participants to mingle and share insights from different global perspectives.

Throughout the week, I participated in a range of workshops that honed specific skills relevant to my studies. The sessions on Thai cooking and mixology, Lanna crafts, and Thai tea blending were particularly memorable.

These workshops were not just about learning new skills but also about understanding the cultural significance behind these practices, which is essential for anyone looking to do business in Thailand or similar contexts.

Networking with diverse participants

Engaging with fellow participants from various countries offered me a glimpse into different business etiquettes and practices, enhancing my ability to navigate through diverse business environments. This exposure is invaluable for any business student aiming to thrive in a globalised market.

The symposium aligned perfectly with my master’s programme, reinforcing and expanding upon the theories we’ve discussed in class. It provided a practical, hands-on approach to learning that textbooks simply cannot offer. This experiential learning component emphasised the importance of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in today’s global business landscape.

Social activities and the scenic beauty of Chiang Rai added another layer to this experience. Whether it was during breaks or the scheduled dinners on our own, every moment was an opportunity to build friendships and enjoy the stunning views of northern Thailand.

In conclusion, the experience was a remarkable journey of learning, cultural exchange, and personal growth. It not only complemented my academic pursuits but also broadened my worldview, preparing me for a career in the international business arena.

The connections made and lessons learned during this week in Chiang Rai will undoubtedly influence my professional path for years to come.

Alex’s experience

Consulting project

For my consulting project at the symposium, my team was matched with Thanapiriya Public Company (TNP) Limited. After a week of trips to TNP warehouses and stores across North Thailand, the company requested a 5-year growth plan for their profitable family business.

The expansion of their online marketplace via an app, vertical expansion of their own product line, a foreign expansion into Vietnam and HR optimisation were all recommended after an in-depth analysis of the companies operations. A 15-minute presentation was concluded with happy CEO’s and a close second place for my team.

Academic sessions and cultural activity

The symposium provided us with multiple professional lectures on varying aspects regarding Thailand. The first session was based on the challenges and concerns of the famous Mekong River Basin and how the production of multiple damns proves a pressing issue.

The commencing session was regarding the new Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), that aims to boost infrastructure development, which is strategically located close to Bangkok and major ports, to transition Thailand into a developed economy.

These sessions were followed by a cooking class for the famous Pad Thai dish, conducted by a highly qualified and experienced chef. While the symposium was a business development week, the beauty of Thailand couldn’t go a miss. We were taken on a Chiang Rai guided city tour, to experience the old town and famous White Temple.

Benefits and takeaway

The symposium and X-Culture experience overall has provided me with immeasurable benefits. The exposure to diverse cultures has provided me with enhanced cultural awareness and sensitivity while amplifying my communication and teamwork skills, which will prove vital in everyday life and the workplace.

Being an International Management MSc student, the symposium has provided me with real-world application of international business concepts, and most importantly given me friends for life.
