MRes

Our Master of Research (MRes) is designed to equip postgraduates with the essential skills, techniques and direct laboratory experience necessary to pursue a future career in research.

MRes in Biosciences

This is a one-year programme designed to provide a valuable postgraduate qualification that enables individuals to undertake a substantial 6-month research project in the laboratory of an internationally-renowned scientist. The programme is well suited for someone thinking of undertaking a PhD but wishing first to learn more about research in biosciences, and also for those seeking careers in research outside academia.

The majority of MRes research projects are undertaken in the School of Biosciences. We also support projects arranged in other Schools (e.g. Medicine and Psychology) within the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences.

We also welcome applications from individuals with relevant commercial experience who only wish to undertake Stage 1 of the Programme (Postgraduate Certificate).

Find out more and how to apply

It’s a really good way to develop practical skills. You get one on one support, part of the lab group, learn from your supervisor and PhD students. It’s really nice to get the intensive part of the course done first, and then you’re ready for your research project. Poster presentations and grant proposal sessions help to set you up for becoming a researcher.

Many of our graduating MRes students achieve excellent employment opportunities within organisations in roles such as laboratory technicians, teachers, consultants, nature conservationists and research technicians.

Our MRes programme is also ideal if you are thinking of undertaking a PhD but would like to learn more about research first. Approximately 55–65% of our MRes students go on to do a PhD.
