Application process

We welcome applications for projects undertaking research for patient benefit.

Eligibility for access

We are able to collect prospective samples with generic consent allowing genetic research, animal research and transfer of samples nationally and internationally to research institutions and commercial companies. Samples will only be released for studies that are for patient benefit.

If you want to request samples from the Biobank, you should be employed by one of the following:

  • a recognised academic institution or NHS organisation
  • a commercial organisation involved in research

We welcome all sizes of application from large-scale multiple sample applications to smaller scale pilot projects. Where demand for material exceeds its availability, access will be prioritised based on scientific merit.

Review of applications

Most applications will be reviewed by the Cardiff University Biobank Scientific Review Committee. Applications of a controversial nature may require additional review.

We enact a cost recovery model therefore evidence of funding is required before an application is approved. Applications can be made before funding is obtained but final approval will not be given until this is in place.

If your application has been unsuccessful and you wish to make an appeal, this should be made to us in writing via email.
