Redesigning Bute
As part of a major investment, we have refurbished the Welsh School of Architecture’s Grade II listed Bute Building to incorporate a wide range of bespoke facilities for students and staff.
These facilities include a dedicated zone for craft and digital fabrication, studios relocated together to improve the studio environment and culture, along with the addition of a hybrid studio and a Living Lab: a space where academia, communities and industries can work together.
The redesign of Bute also incorporates dedicated space for postgraduate students, including refurbished rooms and a new auditorium for hosting symposia and conferences, as well as break-out and rest areas that support informal and social activities.
The Living Lab is a key feature of the project and helps to enhance the impact of our interdisciplinary research. It occupies an easily accessed, dedicated facility with high-end AV equipment and an observation room, and is used for studies, presentations and workshops with external collaborators.
