Giving future archaeology students the best opportunities
Julia Wise (BA 1986) came to Cardiff to study archaeology in 1983 and now works in the Heritage and Archaeology Team at Buckinghamshire Council. She’s pledged a gift in her Will to help ensure the next generation of archaeologists can study at Cardiff, free from the pressure of financial worries.
“I knew from a young age that I wanted to be an archaeologist. My parents and grandparents were always interested in the world around them, and that inspired me too.
"I wanted to study British archaeology but didn’t do very well in my A-levels, so I worked for five years and took evening classes to get my qualifications.
"I was lucky that Cardiff University was very focussed on mature students and willing to take a chance on someone with only two A-levels. I was also very fortunate to receive a full grant to cover the costs.
"That’s really what made my studies possible – without it, I probably wouldn’t have gone to university.
"I wanted to make something similar happen for future Cardiff archaeology students, to help them with the cost of university, so they can benefit in the same way I did.
"I don’t have any dependents and my sister encouraged me to do something that really mattered to me with my Will.
"I would say to anyone thinking of doing the same, if your experience of university was fundamental to you, then consider leaving a gift. The process was very easy and you can help future students follow their passions.”
