Cardiff University has a vibrant and richly diverse community of postgraduate researchers across a broad subject base. Postgraduate researchers undertake their studies and research within an institutional culture of both discipline strength and embedded interdisciplinarity. Many will have a strong connection with one of the University’s research centres, including the new University Research Institutes. Many, too, are supported in their research studies by scholarships or bursaries provided by their School or centre, and by excellent laboratories and resources, including the newly acquired Rare Books collection.
We seek further to build our postgraduate researcher community, especially where the postgraduate research programme has a strong connection with the University’s research themes and priorities – including innovation, impact, internationalisation and interdisciplinarity. Cardiff University’s President’s Research Scholarships Scheme supports this aim: 43 new PhD students are funded via this scheme in 2010-11; a further 35 funded places are available for 2011-12.
The University Graduate College aims to continue to optimise funding opportunities, both internal and external, that allow us to build postgraduate research training that is aligned with important areas of research, including those that will develop new research networks and collaborations and will have a significant impact.
The University Graduate College encourages our postgraduate researchers to create their own cross-discipline research dialogues, networks and knowledge exchange opportunities through the Postgraduate Researcher Initiative Scheme.
