From Monday 25 March, we will be accepting bookings from other Universities for the final few tickets. To avoid disappointment, be sure to book yours this week!

PhD Comics: ‘The Power of Procrastination’ – A Talk by Jorge Cham
Wednesday 17 April, 4:30pm
Julian Hodge Building

Join Jorge Cham, the man behind the hugely popular PhD Comics, for a fun and informal talk about his experiences in bringing humour into the lives of stressed out PhDs! The talk will also examine the source of PhD anxieties and explore the guilt, the myth, and the power of procrastination.
Jorge has travelled to over 150 universities and research centres around the world, lecturing and hearing graduate students from all walks of life share their stories of academic anxiety and de-motivation. Described as ‘humourous, thought-provoking and helpful’, this talk will be the perfect escape for a busy PhD or Supervisor.

After the talk, Jorge will be doing a Q&A session, and then there will be a chance to socialise with a cheese and wine reception. Soft drinks will also be available.

Click here to register for the event.

The Cheltenham Science Festival is looking for early career scientists or science professionals to share their passion for science in an outreach program for year 9 pupils called Careering Around.

Careering Around – careers guidance but not as you know it – gets KS3
& 4 pupils thinking about the benefits of qualifications in science,
technology, engineering and maths as they come face to face with
people working in science-related fields. Unlike a standard careers
fair, Careering Around involves interactive sessions based on a speed
dating format, making it lively, dynamic and definitely memorable!

The Festival is looking for enthusiastic people who have recently begun working in science-related fields to join them for one or two days between 7-8th and 12-14th November. They will be visiting schools in Gloucestershire and Somerset and working with Y9 pupils.

The schedule is as follows:
Wednesday 7th Nov – The Cotswold School, Bourton-on-the-Water and
Brimsham Green School, Yate
Thursday 8th Nov – Lakers School, Coleford and Ribston Hall School, Gloucester
Monday 12th Nov – The Castle School, Taunton (this school will host
and has invited other schools to attend).
Tuesday 13th Nov – Kingsmead Academy and West Somerset Community College
Wednesday 14th Nov – Millbrook Academy, Gloucester and Newent
Community School, Newent

The group will meet each morning (in Gloucester and or Bristol) and a minibus will take them to each school. The Science Festival can reimburse you for travel from your house/place of work to the meeting point.

For more information please click here or contact Rebecca on 01242 775822 or at education@cheltenhamfestivals.com.

Transition Conference

Friday 16th November – Cardiff University Graduate Centre

The Transition conference aims to showcase the huge variety of disciplines and approaches utilised by post-graduate researchers working in the humanities and social sciences within Cardiff University, and promote exchange and collaboration across different schools and departments. In particular, we wish to build upon the inter-disciplinary environment that exists within the school of European Languages, Translation and Politics by reaching out to other schools with shared interests or methods.

We invite submissions for papers or presentations dealing with the topic of transition, be that political or technological change, the evolution of minority languages, or new forms of cultural or linguistic expression.

We hope the event will appeal to students wanting to gain experience and confidence by presenting their research in a supportive environment. The conference aims to provide a platform to reflect on the work of the previous academic year, or plans for future research, and to welcome a new cohort of students.

Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

· The EU and international relations: the Euro crisis, enlargement, the Arab Spring
· Journalism and new media
· Languages and translation: translation and adaptation as forms of transition
· Economics and recessionary politics: the credit crisis, banking reform
· Political theory: transition in political systems, the changing meaning of citizenship and identity
· Devolution: policy differences, constitutional change, re-territorialisation.
· Cultures: memories of transition (historical or political events), personal transitions in culture, cultural agency in political change

Submission guidelines:

Please send abstracts of not more than 300 words by 29 October 2012 to the following email address: Taylorh16@cardiff.ac.uk

We aim for presentations to run for 20-35 minutes each, and welcome submissions from both PhD and Masters’ students.
