Call for Conference Committee Members (deadline 23 November)
The University Graduate College is pleased to announce that the schedule of 2012-13 postgraduate interdisciplinary conferences has now been finalised:
Spotlight on Social Sciences: Thursday 14 March 2013
Voice of Humanities: Thursday 21 March 2013
Speaking of Science: Thursday 2 May 2013
Postgraduate researchers are invited to join a committee which will be supported by administrative staff from the University Graduate College.
The conferences provide an opportunity for new and more advanced postgraduate research students to give talks and present posters from a wide range of subjects and disciplines, thereby giving a fascinating insight into research that is taking place across the University. The conferences, which are also open to postgraduate researchers from neighbouring institutions, provide a supportive environment for students to present their work to an audience of their peers. The events will open with a keynote speaker and end with a wine reception. To view further information about the conference, please click here.
Students who have joined the steering committees in the past have greatly enjoyed the experience and have viewed it as a useful addition to their CV. Getting involved will enable you to develop transferable skills that can be applied in wide variety of future career paths. In addition, the skills developed will be useful for organising other events during your PhD (e.g. School-based seminars, regional conferences or cross-disciplinary events under a particular theme).
As a committee member you will have the opportunity to:
1. learn how a conference is organised
2. draft agendas and chair meetings
3. provide input into the conference programme
4. offer suggestions and decide on the keynote speaker
5. review abstracts, decide which ones should be accepted and provide feedback
6. organise publicity
7. judge talks and posters (cash prizes will be on offer)
8. chair panels
Committee meetings will last approximately 1.5 hours and will take place as noted in the table below. You would be expected to put in some time commitment outside the meetings and to help set up the event.
If you are interested in sitting on the student committee please e-mail the relevant contact noted below by Friday 23 November 2012 remembering to tell us which School you are from. It would also be useful to know if you have attended the event in the past:
Spotlight on Social Sciences Myra Woods (email@example.com)
Voice of Humanities Rebecca Green (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Speaking of Science Rebecca Green (email@example.com)
Places on the committees will be considered in the order expressions of interest are received but the aim is to have even representation across member schools. Please choose the conference most relevant to your subject as you will only be offered a place on one of the conference committees.
We look forward to hearing from you.
