Student Charter
Cardiff
University, alongside the Cardiff University Students’ Union is pleased to announce the development of a Student Charter to be launched in September 2012.
The Charter will be for all Undergraduate and Postgraduate students and will reflect the Cardiff Partnership by outlining the mutual roles and responsibilities of the University and its students.
As a student, it will offer you the key to accessing all the opportunities that Cardiff has to offer by providing a single source for all student services.
Consultation is already underway in order to develop a Charter owned by all students and staff: a statement of the Cardiff Community.
The University and Students’ Union established the Student Charter Development Group in June 2011, chaired by Professor Stephen Denyer, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students. The group has outlined the following reasons as Cardiff’s justification for introducing a Student Charter:
- to provide a formal agreement of what student can expect from the Institution and what the University will expect of students;
- to provide a sovereign document for all students, including PG and international students;
- to inform prospective students of what would be expected of them and what they could expect in advance of arriving;
- to promote ‘The Cardiff Experience’;
- to be a touchstone document signposting ongoing work such as Assessment Matters, Student Support and Employability and other sources of information;
- to document thresholds of expectation, providing objectives for the University;
- to standardise commitment from the University for a more consistent experience;
- to be offered as an induction tool into HE;
- to not be an aspirational document;
- to be a document that evolves alongside expectations;
- to provide a holistic approach to how wider information is presented whilst avoiding over-commitment;
- to be a document with value for everyone, e.g. personal tutors;
- to be a point of reference for ‘when things go wrong’ for a student.
The group has undertaken a range of consultation exercises to date, including with students, academic staff and directorate staff, and has used the information gained from these to develop our Student Charter to date.
