Karl Maton - SOCSI Visitor
The purpose of my visit:
Sept 2006 - Presenting a paper entitled 'The sociology of education beyond Bourdieu and Bernstein', which introduced the basic ideas of 'legitimation code theory' and how those concepts are being used in studies of a range of issues in education, including research into school Music, students with Asperger's Syndrome and educational technology.
I also had discussions with Sally Power and Brian Davies about all manner of issues in the sociology of education.

What I gained from my visit:
It was sadly a very brief visit, but my first to Cardiff. I enjoyed the opportunity of discussing this new approach in the sociology of education with various members of the School. Oh, and I had a fabulous curry, which I miss in Australia. I look forward to returning soon.
