Module Aims

The module provides students with the opportunity to consider the impact that gender has on their own lives, as well as with the knowledge and skills to assess and evaluate gender relations and inequalities within contemporary society. A knowledge of gender debates, including equality measures and equal opportunities policy is increasingly in demand by employers in both the private and public (education etc) sector.

The module aims to familiarise students with the impact of gender relations on everyday life, and to enable them to evaluate causes of and remedies for gender inequalities in public and private contexts. The module draws primarily on sociological and feminist perspectives and empirical research. It critically examines notions of gender  and sexuality as they relate to embodiment, subjectivity  and  the environment in a local and global context.


Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Comprehension

  • Demonstrate knowledge of gender relations and their impact on everyday life.
  • Know historical and contemporary debates taking place on gender and its representation, practice and development
  • Understand notions of gender and sexuality as they relate to embodiment, subjectivity and the environment in a local and global context.

Skills (Application and Analysis)

  • Use theoretical tools to understand and critique gender relations
  • Analyse relationships between historical and contemporary debates and apply a critical perspective.
  • Draw upon theoretical approaches and empirical examples to make sense of their own (gendered) lives and experiences

Understanding (Synthesis and Evaluation)

  • Critically evaluate theoretical approaches to understanding gender relations
  • Recognise the interconnections between gender and other social categories (such as age, sexuality, ethnicity and socio-economic status)
  • Evaluate the contribution of feminism to social scientific inquiry

Transferable Skills

The module will contribute to the development of the following transferable skills: Oral and written communication skills (in seminars and a weekly journal), critical and analytical skills (in essays and exams),self-presentation (in seminars and lectures), independent study and working collectively.


Synopsis of Module Content

The module begins by mapping the gender terrain of everyday life, considering the ways in which gender makes a difference to public and private life, across generations and over time.  Theoretical and historical perspectives are considered as ways of making sense of these gender relations and differences. The module goes on to consider how gender relations can be addressed, through social movements and policy agendas/initiatives.  The module pays attention to both gendered experience and gender inequality. The module covers the following key topics: Introduction to Gender Studies, Feminisms; Gender, Sexuality and Men’s Studies; Gendered Childhoods ; Gender, Environment and Development.


Opportunities for Formative Assessment

Students have the opportunity to submit formative journal in the Autumn semester. Individual feedback is given to each student; and generic  feedback is posted on Learning Central. Students also undertake
presentations in seminars, and feedback is provided by seminar tutors.


Arrangements for Feedback on Work

Individual feedback is provided on summative essays and journals, oral feedback is provided in seminars. Generic feedback is provided on  Learning Central on the written examination and formative journals. Students are also encouraged to contact the module convenor and their personal tutor.
