Cardiff competes in the world league of humanities research with strengths in all aspects of social and cultural life.

Understanding the Human World

This great range puts us demand with policy-makers, professional training bodies and research funding bodies. Cardiff researchers inform policy at home and abroad in such areas as health inequalities, child nutrition, maritime safety standards and policy. We have also made considerable impact on the built environment, both past - through dramatic archaeological discoveries of the ancient world - and present - through architectural and planning projects around the world.

Our research feeds back into continual improvement in the professions, including architects, urban planners, lawyers, accountants and archaeologists. This strength has won considerable funding support for research units in fields as diverse as sustainable business practice and the ethics of genetic research. We have also won a coveted place in the national network of Doctoral Training Centres. The Wales Doctoral Training Centre trains the next generation of high-level researchers in areas including management, education and economics.

The creation of the University's Sustainable Places Research Institute combines strengths in planning, architecture, social science, law, business and many scientific, technological, engineering, mathematical and biomedical disciplines to take a unique multidisciplinary approach to the creation of sustainable city-regions around the world.
