Law Society former council chamber renamed in honour of UK Prime Minister

A senior law lecturer has secured a motion to rename a meeting room at the Law Society’s Hall in Chancery Lane, London, in honour of the only solicitor in the UK to be made Prime Minister.

David Dixon, who is the Law Society council member for South Wales, proposed the motion to commemorate David Lloyd George at the last meeting of the Law Society council which took place in Cardiff on 17 May 2017.  The motion was passed by acclamation.

Lloyd George became Prime Minister in December 1916 and to date is the only solicitor in England and Wales to attain this office.

David Dixon said, “The Law Society should be proud that one of its members, a member of the profession it represents, promotes and supports, became the head of the UK government. His is an inspirational story for it was a colossal achievement for someone we would now regard as a High Street practitioner, who practised in a small town with a population of under 1,000 people on the north coast of Cardigan Bay and for whom English was a second language, to become Prime Minister of what was at the time the richest and most powerful nation on earth.”

“Moreover, he assumed office at a time of crisis, when the United Kingdom appeared to be losing the First World War. He led the country to victory in that War and through the years of uncertainty which followed.”

It is hoped that the room, which was once used as the Society’s council chamber, will be renamed during the Society’s next council meeting in July.

Following the meeting, David Dixon said, “This motion is about showing pride in the profession and honouring the memory of a solicitor who achieved great things and of whom the profession should be proud.”
