Winner of Eisteddfod Crown is announced

06 August 2008

Hywel Griffiths

The winner of the 2008 Eisteddfod Crown, the design of which was inspired by some of the University’s most notable architecture and created as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations, has been revealed.

Hywel Griffiths, whose nom de plume was Y Tynnwr Lluniau (The Taker of Pictures), has become the second youngest person to win the Crown. He was presented with the prestigious prize during a traditional ceremony for his collection of poems on the title ‘Streets of Pleasure’.

Motivated by a night out in Cardiff, 25-year old Hywel Griffiths originally from Carmarthen won the coveted prize on his first attempt. His prose was inspired by a Saturday night stroll along a "seething" Cardiff city centre street.

He said some of his poems represented an external commentary by a member of the generation currently flocking from all over Wales to live in Cardiff. Others were portraits of the people he had met there, and illustrations of situations he saw and that have stayed in his memory. The city’s duality in terms of class, language and the tension between the past and the future were important themes throughout his verses. Eisteddfod crown presentation

The University commissioned Welsh jewellery designer and silversmith, Karen Williams to create a unique and distinctive Crown that reflected the University’s heritage and architecture, including the iconic Main Building. The University also donated the £750.00 cash prize awarded to Hywel Griffiths.

Vice Chancellor Dr David Grant said: "On behalf of Cardiff University, I extend our warmest congratulations to Hywel on winning this prestigious prize. The Eisteddfod is a very important part of cultural life in Wales and the University is proud to be so strongly associated with it."

As one of the Eisteddfod’s leading poetic prizes the Crown it awarded to the best free poems up to 300 lines on a given subject. This year’s competition was adjudicated by Aled Gwyn, Elin ap Hywel and Derec Llwyd Morgan. The adjudication was delivered by Mr Gwyn in the presence of the Gorsedd of the Bards and Archdruid Dic Jones.
