Two of the University’s former creative writing students have been named in the shortlist for the Wales Book of the Year.
Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch and Deborah Kay Davies, who studied the MA in creative writing in the mid 1990’s have both made the shortlist for the English language book for their titles Not in These Shoes and Grace, Tamar and Laszlo the Beautiful respectively.
Grace, Tamar and Laszlo the Beautiful is Davies’ debut collection of short stories and Not in These Shoes, is Wynne-Rhydderch's second collection of poetry.
The third shortlisted book in the English language category is Blood Etc by award-winning novelist Gee Williams.
Richard Gwyn, senior lecturer on the MA in creative writing said: "Cardiff Creative Writing continues to provide a special niche in the popular world of creative writing Masters programmes, and it is reassuring that graduates from across the two and a half decades of the course's existence continue to meet with success. We congratulate Deborah and Samantha and wish them well in their careers."
The award ceremony for the Wales Book of the Year takes place on Monday 15th June 2009. The judging panel this year includes poet, essayist and former editor of Planet, John Barnie and broadcaster and travel writer Mike Parker.
