Dr Daniel Farewell from the School of Medicine has been awarded the Royal Statistical Society Research Prize 2011 in recognition of his original contribution to longitudinal and event history methodology and their interrelationship.

Dr Farewell, based in the Department of Primary Care and Public Health, used ideas from event history analysis to develop novel approaches to longitudinal data analysis, especially when there are missing values.

His PhD research conducted at Lancaster University led to a paper read before the RSS in 2007 on the analysis of longitudinal data when subjects drop out before study completion.

The RSS Research Prize is awarded biennially for an outstanding original contribution to statistical theory or application as shown in work published in the open literature, and aimed at research workers near the beginning of their research career.
