The School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education has teamed-up with the British Medical Association in Wales to encourage the next generation of doctors to train in Wales.
‘We want the best to be the best’ is a series of short films focusing on five different medical specialties – anaesthesia, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, pathology and psychiatry. The films aim to sell Wales as a key destination to study medicine and attract more junior doctors to apply and complete their postgraduate training here.
The School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education is responsible for commissioning, overseeing and monitoring the provision of education and training for some 2,600 doctors and dentists in postgraduate training posts in the NHS across Wales. The School ensures that all training grade doctors and dentists in Wales have access to high quality postgraduate facilities and educational support so that they can achieve their potential in service provision to the NHS in Wales.
Professor Derek Gallen, Dean of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education, said: "These short films seek to demonstrate that current doctors in specialist training recognise the value Wales offers to junior doctors and that they are keen to encourage others to follow suit. We hope that those doctors applying for specialist training in 2009 will watch the DVD and that it will help convince them that Wales should be their number one place to train."
Welsh Secretary of the BMA, Dr Richard Lewis said: "Wales has a great deal to offer both in terms of quality of life and the quality of training provided and this is illustrated throughout the series of short films. The nation can more than "hold its own" with the best of the rest that the UK has to offer."
The timetable for the next round of Specialty Training recruitment to Wales in 2009 has been published. Applications for Specialty Training posts commencing in August 2009 open on the 2nd January 2009 with interviews taking place in February.
All doctors who are short-listed for interview will receive a copy of the DVD as part of their information pack. The films are also available to view online at: www.doctorstrainingwales.tv
