Wish you were here?

25 April 2007

Do you want to experience the grasslands of southern Brazil or the perfumes and sounds of the Amazon jungle? Or would you prefer a journey into the nanoworld or to the Dark Side of the Universe?

These are just some of the subjects covered in the huge range of talks available during Cardiff University’s Open Day on Wednesday 25 April. With some 36,000 applicants chasing 4,500 places each year Cardiff is already one of the most popular universities in Britain and our Open Day showcases a wide range of work which has earned the University world-wide recognition.

More than 5,000 potential students and their parents and supporters are expected on the day, with visitors due from across Wales and the rest of the UK as well as from several European countries. Staff and current students will be on hand to give advice on applications, finance and day-to-day living and studying in Cardiff.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Wish you were here?’ and a host of displays and talks will demonstrate the full range of teaching excellence across the University’s 28 academic schools. Topics include the causes of the ozone hole over the Antarctic, the chemistry of sexual attraction, the secrets of space and why talk matters.

A talk on the grasslands of Brazil is just one of the offerings from the School of Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences. Exploration geology is a career that takes you to places no tourist would visit. The challenge involves a chase across continents and keen detective skills to discover new, sustainable sources of minerals and materials, such as metals, oil and gas. The degree course in Exploration and Resource Geology has a long tradition due to the University’s close proximity to the South Wales coalfields and the school is a world leader in mining and exploration.

Group and individual bookings for the day can be made on-line by clicking on the Open Day link on the Cardiff University website at www.cardiff.ac.uk. The site also includes a full programme to enable parents, teachers and careers advisers to plan their day. Places can also be reserved by telephoning the Schools and Colleges Liaison Office on 029 2087 6000 or e-mailing openday@cardiff.ac.uk.
