Profile

MPhil, Dip. Res., PGCE/In service

Jan joined the Centre for Lifelong Learning in 1999 from SOCSI where she lectured on Gender Relations and Society, and Women and Work, whilst completing her MPhil entitled ‘From Honorary Chap to Mother: Challenges Facing Women who work in the Professions and are Mothers’ which focused on women in the NHS who combine career progression with family formation.

Jan’s portfolio includes the Business and Management Studies subject area which she has developed over 10 years, and which now provides a comprehensive and dynamic programme of part-time courses to support new managers in the public, private and third sectors, and supports employability both for graduates and the wider public. Jan is the academic lead for several courses for the Professional Development Team see cardiff.ac.uk/learn/training.

Jan is currently developing a research project to explore the learning trajectories and biographies of part-time adult learners, and how the provision of, and participation in, relevant, flexible learning and teaching opportunities can contribute to a measurable ‘community uplift’ at individual, social/cultural and economic levels.

Work with External Agencies
The partnership approach is promoted in all strands of work, including widening participation for non-traditional students particularly women from BME and disadvantaged backgrounds through provision of innovative programmes of learning and teaching. Jan has been particularly successful in attracting external funds for partnership projects which include:
