Many young people have a keen interest in music in a range of areas, including events organisation, singing, rap, recording skills and live performance. A great deal of young people use these interests as hopes and dreams to aspire towards managing and developing their own careers, for example becoming a professional mc, a professional singer, a club or mobile events DJ, a night club events organiser or a community and charity events organiser. These are ambitious and inspirational career choices that represent genuine and achievable employment or self-employment prospects.
However, while young people can often have vast potential in their preferred career route, for example MC-ing, DJ-ing or singing, they can often lack the business savvy and entrepreneurial skills to manage, finance or promote themselves in the competitive industry in which they may find themselves. This course aims to supplement students’ existing skills with a programme of entrepreneurial and business start-up skills tailored to their specific musical interest. It is designed to spring-board them towards a prosperous career through providing a combination of practical experiences and theoretical lessons by initiating their first steps in business that will aim to generate enough momentum to keep their business ideas buoyant long into the future.
Who is this course for?
Anyone with an interest in music media business and social enterprise skills. It will offer advice and guidance in how to conduct sales phone calls, financial forecasts (construct a budget, profit and loss account and cashflow forecast), and how to manage a business project and develop a business plan.
Learning and Teaching
The course will consist of:
- A series of Introductory teaching workshops.
- A group visit to a recording studio (or a similar place of interest).
- A final project invloving the write up of a business plan.
Teaching workshops will invlove open discussion, internet and MS Excel / Word, practical examples including profits and loss, budgeting, cash flow forecasts, SWOT analyis, PEST analysis.
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely shure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
There will be no formal examinations but there will be various pieces of assessment including:
- Demonstration of knowledge and independant thinking in discussions during introductory teaching workshops;
- Assessment of sales phone calls exercise;
- Assessment of portfolio/ business plan.
Your work will be assessed by your tutor, who will offer you written feedback which we hope you will find consturctive. The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. Our methods are flexible and are designed to increase your confidence and skills.
The tutor will recommend books, articles and web sources.
