Risk Actors and Public Risk: the media

Award Holders: Jenny Kitzinger

Funder: Review project commissioned by Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform - BERR, 2008

Based at: Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC)

As part of the UK government's review of the management of risk we were commissioned to advise on the media's role.

Our report, funded by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reformprovides an overview of how risk reporting operates and why the media amplify (or ‘play down’) risks in certain circumstances and how this shifts over time.

It also summarises how media personnel interact with other key players (e.g. their ‘expert’ sources and their audiences) and reflects on levers for change within the UK context.
