Research Overview
Dr John Cokley is a Visiting Research Fellow at Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.
I am researching and developing new business models and new products for journalism, especially in the area of team work and retail sales. As part of teams of colleagues in Australia, Sweden, the United States and South Africa, I am focusing on opportunities offered by the Long Tail phenomenon.
I am especially interested in how communities in ultra-remote locations ‘stay in touch’, and launched and continue to lead international research teams investigating and publishing about media opportunities serving the first communities in outer space.
Research Interests
My research, publishing and teaching covers the areas of innovative journalism products and platforms, and innovative approaches to media businesses and audiences. Since leaving my 20-industry career as a journalist (writer, subeditor and website developer) with News Corporation in 2002, I have completed my doctoral thesis and authored or co-authored more than 30 articles and papers for international and Australian refereed journals and conferences, published the monograph The Application of In Situ Digital Networks to News Reporting and Delivery (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller Aktiengesellschaft & Co. KG, Saarbrücken, Germany, 2008) and co-edited the volume I, Journalist with Dr Lee Duffield (Pearson, 2006) contributing to the fields of media education, news production and delivery, and new product development in journalism.
Journals which have published some of my articles include Convergence, the International Journal of Astrobiology, the International Journal of Applied Aviation Studies, the Asia-Pacific Business Review (New Delhi), the Journal of Australian Studies, Australian Journal of Communication and the Australian Journalism Review.
