Community Journalism - Our Vision
Our vision is ambitious. Wales can be the place where the future of local journalism is written. We believe this will involve a collaboration between new groups of community journalists and professionals, working together to create sustainable local news hubs.
The aim is to create more jobs for journalists at local and community level, not to replace professionals with amateurs.
Part of our role is to investigate business models which may involve a healthy mix of professionalism and volunteerism.
The future will be digital but will also involve a range of old and new technologies to help hyperlocals maximise their potential. There are some excellent initiatives to build on. Wales already has more than its share of small-scale community journalism projects: our aim is to work with them to test new ideas, new models and new approaches, to make this activity more than the sum of its parts.
But we also want to be a catalyst for new initiatives - especially in those places where local newspapers are no longer (or have never been) viable.
