Cardiff European Documentation Centre Honorary Consuls event, September 2013

Ian Thomson, Director of the Cardiff EDC, hosted an event at Information Services' European Documentation Centre on Monday 16th September for the Consular Association in Wales and the Head of the European Commission in Wales.

The event was attended by members of the Consular Association in Wales, representing a number of countries including Japan, Brazil, Germany, France, Finland, the Slovak Republic, Lithuania, Switzerland and Sweden. The Director of University Libraries, Janet Peters, and the University Vice-Chancellor Prof Colin Riordan, also addressed the networking event about the work of the Cardiff EDC.

The event was very well received, with the Honorary Consuls discovering more about Cardiff EDC, its role in providing information and research resources about Europe, and the Centre’s European-flavoured social outreach activities. The Vice-Chancellor also spoke to the Consuls about the University’s international strategy for enabling Cardiff’s students to gain experience of studying and working abroad.  Hugh Thomas, the President of the Consular Association in Wales, responded by warmly welcoming the University’s increasing focus on international collaboration and partnership.

"The work of Cardiff EDC, highlighted to the visiting Honorary Consuls during this event, plays an important role in the wider University's international profile and its outreach activities," said Janet Peters, University Librarian.

"The Cardiff EDC is currently leading on a project to increase collaboration amongst European Documentation Centres across Europe, and also has a successful internship programme which sees the Centre welcome European students on work placement," added Janet. "The Centre also provides in-depth information about Europe and the European Union to support the study and research activities of Cardiff University."

Ian Thomson, Director of Cardiff EDC, said: "I'm really pleased that so many of the Honorary Consuls were able to attend the event. It’s really helped to spread the word about the numerous resources and information sources available in the EDC. We hope to collaborate with some of the Consuls on various projects in the coming months."
