Guide to MindGenius
When you start MindGenius the Resource Centre will open: there is a useful ‘Get Started’ video available here, along with tabs for Templates and Sample Maps.
Creating your map
Your map will be created and displayed in the main window of the screen. When you create a new map (click the New Map icon on the toolbar), you will be prompted to name the core branch of your map: type the title you want and select OK or press Return. To edit branch titles at any time, double-click the branch and start typing. You can also change text size, style, colour and more by double-clicking the branch.
Adding branches – you must have a branch selected to add another branch. Simply start typing and the ‘Add Branch’ box will open with your text in it. You can change text style and size and more before clicking OK.
Moving branches – you can drag and drop branches to move their position. You can select more than branch to drag and drop by holding down the Ctrl key and then clicking each branch.
Adding pictures – click on a branch to select it and add pictures to that branch using Insert>Picture or by clicking on the Picture icon in the toolbar.
Adding floating text or pictures – add a floating picture or text by clicking on the icons on the toolbar. You can choose the position of the floating text/picture in the main window.
Adding notes – select a branch and then you can add Notes to your branch in the Notes editor (lower left hand side of screen). These notes won’t show in the map in the main window but will be indicated by a pencil icon on the branch. The notes will show in your exported map if you select this option.
Toolbar – hover over any icon on the toolbars to see its function.
Layout of map – you can change the layout of your map by using the icons on the toolbar or going to View>Map Layout and selecting from the various options. These include Map Diagram (clockwise or anti-clockwise with your core branch in the centre), Outline or Affinity (core branch at the top of the page) or Input or Output Tree.
Formatting your map – you can apply the same style for branches of the same level by formatting the map style (Format>Map Styles). In the Style Formatting tab you can apply a different style to each branch level as well as floating text or pictures. You can select the colour, style and size of font and change the branch shape, connectors and boundaries.
Add numbers to your branches/topics – by selecting Format>Numbering from the menu, you can add numbers to your branches/topics in either the Map Editor (main window) or Map Explorer or both. This can be useful if you are essay planning or project planning, and want to export your map with numbers assigned to the topics.
The Map Explorer is automatically created on the left hand side of the screen as you add branches to your map. You can select a topic in the Map Explorer and it will make that branch the focus in the main window. If you are working on a particularly large map, this is very useful to zoom in on branches and add further branches or notes to your topic. You can also expand or collapse the sections in the Map Explorer.
Printing your map
If you select File>Print, you will be given options to select the Entire Map or Current View (and to expand branches). You can also choose to print a Map image only, Text outline only or Map image with a text outline. In Text outline, you can also choose whether to include branch notes or not.
Exporting your map
You can save your map as a MindGenius file and continue working on it but you can also export the contents of your map to PDF, MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint or HTML.
To export your map, either click the icon in top toolbar of the file type required or select File>Export>filetype. You will be given different options depending on which file type you select. For example, if you choose to export to HTML, you will be given the options of creating a webmap, a single HTML document or a website whose structure is based on the map. If exporting to Word or PDF, you can export the current view or entire map, and also select which data is exported (e.g. Notes, Pictures, Attachments).
