Director of Human Resources, Safety, Health & Environment
Ms Jayne Dowden is Director of the Human Resources, Safety, Health & Environment Directorate for Cardiff University; a brief which encompasses a wide range of matters related to people working and studying at the University. These include recruitment, employment advice, training and development, health, safety and a positive working environment.
A Cardiff graduate in Classics, Ms Dowden’s career began in the Department of Industry’s Regional Development Grants Office. This was followed by a period as a Research Officer working for the Welsh Consumer Council. A family move to the Midlands in 1988 led to specialisation in HR, at first in the private sector in legal partnerships and subsequently at Director level for the West Midlands Magistrates’ Courts Service. Her first taste of higher education involved running the operational HR service at the University of Birmingham.
In 2006, Ms Dowden returned to Wales and Cardiff University as Director of Human Resources and subsequently joined the University Board in July 2008. Her role as Director of Human Resources also expanded to include responsibility for the Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Unit. Her key task is developing the University’s people strategies so it is best placed to support and develop staff and thereby help ensure its ongoing success.
