Sir Donald Walters
Sir Donald Walter’s long association with Cardiff University began in 1988 with his election to Chair of the University Council – a role in which his financial and organisational acumen helped to mould the successful management of the University upon the merger of the former University College Cardiff and the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology.
Sir Donald held this position for 10 years, and remained as a member of Council until July 2010. He was also a University Vice-President from 1989-2004 and has been a member of Court since 1988. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the University in 1988.
During his time at Cardiff, Sir Donald has brought to bear his considerable experience of the commercial world gained as an Executive Director of Chartered Trust plc and Non-Executive Director of a number of companies engaged largely in financial services. This followed a successful career as a barrister.
He is a former member (1980-1993) and Deputy Chair (1984-1993) of the Welsh Development Agency; former member of the Development Board for Rural Wales (1984-98) and was Vice-Chairman of the Institute of Welsh Affairs (1988-2008); Director (1985-2000) and Vice-Chairman (1990-2000) of the Welsh National Opera; and Chairman of Llandough Hospital NHS Trust (1992-98). He was awarded a Knighthood in 1983 and served as High Sheriff of South Glamorgan from 1987-88.
Sir Donald is currently Clerk to the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff Cathedral, Chairman of the Trustees of the Welsh National Opera Pension Fund, and Chairman of the Cardiff University Pensions Fund.
