Dr David Grant

Dr David Grant was Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University from 2001 to 2012. An engineer by profession, he had previously held senior appointments in international engineering companies.

In 2012 Dr Grant was appointed a Non-Executive Director of Renishaw plc; Senior Independent Director of IQE plc; and a Non-Executive Director of the UK's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). Dr Grant has been a Governing Board Member of the Technology Strategy Board since 2007, and was a Council Member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) from 2000 to 2006. He served as a Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering from 2006 to 2012, and has been Chairman of STEMNET since 2011.

David's career commenced as a student apprentice with the Reyrolle Parsons Group in Newcastle-upon-Tyne who manufactured power station turbines, generators and electrical equipment. In 1970 he won a scholarship to the University of Durham and was awarded his PhD in Engineering Science in 1974. He subsequently held Technical and Managing Director appointments in Dowty Group plc and GEC plc. Dr Grant was awarded the IEE's Mensforth Gold Medal in 1996. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1997, and was made a CBE in the same year for his contribution to the UK’s Foresight Programme.
